Alyson Noel

I was born and raised in The OC (although I never actually called it that until the TV show), but after high school I was so desperate to flee suburbia and see the world I took off for Europe, eventually settling in Mykonos, Greece where I lived for several years before moving to Manhattan where I worked as a flight attendant for a major airline, writing my debut novel, FAKING 19, during long weather delays and boring layovers until the day I visited a friend in Newport Beach where I met my future husband and found myself right back in The OC where I live and write full time. There! Whew! (visit: http://www.alysonnoel.com/)

PL&P:  For those who haven't read the series, please tell our readers a little something about the Immortals?"

The Immortals series is the story of Ever and Damen, two star crossed, teenaged soul mates who travel through time and battle against bitter enemies so that they can be together—only to be thwarted every time happiness appears within their reach . . . though they won’t let that deter them!

PL&P: What inspired you to write this series? And why Immortality?

The series was inspired by grief. A few years ago I lost three people I loved in five months, and shortly after that I nearly lost my husband to leukemia (he’s in full remission now!). Experiencing that sort of loss got me thinking a lot about life and death, mortality and immortality, the bonds that tie us even after a loved one is gone, and how our youth loving culture sort of seeks physical immortality by trying to remain youthful looking for as long as we can—and yet, what would happen if we really could achieve it? What would it mean for us, our loved ones, society in general? And since I’ve been interested in all things paranormal since I was a kid, Ever and Damen’s story seemed like the perfect vehicle to explore all of those themes.

PL&P:  Who is the most complex character to write?

Ever. At heart, she longs to be a normal girl again, one who can put on a cute dress, great shoes, and go on a romantic date with her boyfriend without a care in the world, but the truth is, those days are over for her. She’s burdened with psychic powers she doesn’t want, secrets that can never be told, and she’s forced to navigate her way through an increasingly confusing and complex world, wanting to do the right thing, but not always sure what that is. All the while knowing that her immortality will require her to eventually say goodbye to everyone she knows and loves, everyone except Damen, that is.

PL&P: I'm pretty sure when fans read the synopsis of Shadowland, they've endured the waiting for months. How will you differentiate the 3rd book from the first two?

In Shadowland, while Damen’s convinced he’s responsible for what happened at the end of Blue Moon, and sort of retreats into himself, Ever turns to magick, desperate to find a way to reverse the antidote. Along the way encountering the mysterious Jude Knight who challenges everything she once thought was true . . .

PL&P: Do you have a book that you read recently and feel that it hasn't been noticed enough?

Well, I haven’t had a lot of time for reading in the last year or so, but I really enjoyed Night Runner by Max Turner, and Crazy/Beautiful by Lauren Baratz-Logsted.

PL&P: This series has been receiving positive feedbacks. Congratulations. Do you have other future projects? Can you tell us something about it?

Well, there are still a few more books to go in The Immortals series, and I’m also working on a middle grade, spin-off series featuring Riley, Ever’s ghostly sister, that’s set to debut in Fall 2010.

PL&P: Would you like to invite our readers to your upcoming events?

Absolutely! I’ll be singing copies of Shadowland here:
